Is dry shaving your pubic hair safe? Know 5 side effects

Getting rid of pubic hair has become a popular grooming practice for many women who prefer a smooth and clean appearance for their intimate area. However, it is important that the hair removal method is chosen wisely as improper techniques can lead to various side effects and discomfort. Dry shaving is one such method. It refers to the method of shaving without the use of water, shaving cream or other lubricants, which poses potential risks. Let us know the side effects of dry shaving and how it can affect your vaginal health.

Health Shots spoke to Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist, and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinic, to understand the side effects of dry shaving the vagina and get tips to remove pubic hair.

Side effects of dry shaving

Here are 5 side effects of dry shaving the vagina:

1. Razor burn

Razor burn is a painful skin condition that arises mostly due to dry shaving. Dr Kapoor says, “Without the protective layer provided by shaving cream or gel, the razor can drag across the skin, causing irritation and redness.” Razor burns can be uncomfortable and may persist for several days, disrupting daily activities and intimacy.

2. Dry skin

Dry shaving can cause your skin to become dry and irritated by removing its natural oils if you don’t use any shaving cream or enough lubrication. This could make your skin feel itchy and dry and aggravate any issues you already have. Shaving cream should, therefore, always be used because it keeps your skin moisturized and helps you get smooth skin.

3. Increased risk of cuts and nicks

Dry shaving is mostly done in a hurry, which can increase the likelihood of cuts and nicks in the sensitive genital area. In fact, the lack of moisture makes the skin prone to rashes, irritation, and inflammation. These skin issues not only cause discomfort but also increase the risk of infection if not properly cleaned and cared for.

4. Ingrown hair

Ingrown hair is another common side effect of dry shaving the vagina. Dr Kapoor says, “When the hair is cut close to the skin’s surface without proper lubrication, it can sometimes curl back into the skin as it grows. This leads to painful and unsightly bumps that may require additional treatment to resolve.” Proper hydration and lubrication during shaving can reduce the likelihood of ingrown hair.

5. Burning sensation

Dry shaving the sensitive skin around the vaginal area can cause significant irritation and redness. The friction created by the razor blade against dry skin can lead to micro-tears and inflammation. Consequently, this may result in a burning sensation, itchiness and soreness, making it uncomfortable for the person for days after shaving.

Tips for safe hair removal

To avoid the side effects associated with dry shaving the vagina, keep these 5 tips in mind:

1. Wet shaving: Always shave in the shower or bath using warm water to soften the hair and open the pores. Moreover, Dr Kapoor says, “Apply moisturizing shaving cream or gel to provide the necessary lubrication and reduce friction, razor burn, ingrown hair, and razor bumps.”

2. Use a fresh razor: Ensure you use a clean, sharp razor specifically designed for the bikini area. Dull blades can cause more irritation and increase the likelihood of cuts.

3. Shave in the direction of hair growth: Shaving in the direction of hair growth reduces the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.

4. Exfoliate: Gentle exfoliation before shaving can help prevent ingrown hairs and slough off dead skin cells, promoting smoother results.

5. Moisturize after shaving: Post-shave, apply a fragrance-free, gentle moisturizer to soothe the skin and restore its natural hydration.

Keeping the bikini area well-groomed is a personal choice. But it is essential to prioritize safe and effective hair removal methods. Keep these tips in mind, and always use shaving cream or gel before removing hair from any part of your body!
