Most of us ladies try out hair color at one time or another, and this is not a brand-new phenomenon; women have actually been changing hair color for centuries. Due to the fact that they believed it made them more glamorous and sexy, ancient Egyptians dyed their hair with henna. European women wore colored and powdered wigs to express their state of minds along with their stations in life.

Why do we do it? For much of us changing our hair color– something that we can manage – signals that we want to change our lives– which we often can not. And we understand that, for excellent or for bad, a first impression takes place within mere seconds, and typically such decisions start with physical characteristics like eye, size and hair color.

In making these impressions we tend to fall back on long-held stereotypes. We classify blondes as ditzy, attractive or dumb. We relate brunettes with elegance and intelligence. We assume redheads are hot tempered or complex. But where did those stereotypes come from and how real are they?

Most of us ladies experiment with hair color at one time or another, and this is not a new phenomenon; ladies have been altering hair color for centuries. If blondes are dumb, are brunettes any smarter? On a specific level there is no connection of intelligence and hair color, there are a lot more wise brunettes in the world than clever blondes, for the simple factor of volume– there are lots of more brunettes than there are blondes. While only 5% of the men I surveyed mentioned a choice for redheads, I didn’t take offense, particularly given that numerous of them (in my view, mistakenly) classified the strawberry blonde as a blonde, and not (as she should be) on the red side of the fence. Who has more fun: brunettes, redheads, or blondes?
